Finding Your True Self
I am on a mission to help women live their best lives. I believe we all have a purpose, one that is meant to fill our days with beauty, joy, and meaning. But as Oprah Winfrey stated we can’t have a best life without books. I totally agree with that statement. Reading enhances our intelligence, a book can change our life, and a good story can transport us to faraway places.
My latest read is Martha Beck’s “The Way of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self.” This book is about integrity, but not in the moral sense. The word integrity has its root in the word integer, which means intact. As Martha writes, to be in integrity is to be one thing, whole, and undivided. Martha brilliantly uses Dante Alighieri’s classic hero’s journey as the framework to help the reader go through the process of attaining personal integrity.
Sometimes we are just running our lives on autopilot. We just get stuck, in poor habits, no boundaries, people-pleasing, or bad relationships. The book outlines a four-stage process and practical exercises to help us find our way back to integrity. It is a roadmap on the journey to truth and authenticity.
The culture often works against our path to wholeness. How often do we do things because it is what is expected of us? How much of your daily routine is on autopilot because what you are doing is the “right” thing to do. Do you walk around with a low level of anxiety? Do you ever say Thank God it’s Friday, Oh God it’s Monday? Do you accept this because it is what is expected and you are not alone in your feelings…so it must be how you are meant to live?
If any of this rings true for you then you need to get this book and work through the exercises!
As a Life Coached trained by Martha Beck I am using many of these exercises with my clients. The journey is simple but it is not easy.
